Palencia and Valladolid airport or Barajas: which airport suits depending on the flight and the area, and why the Montaña Palentina looks to Santander first
Palencia has no airport of its own and the answer depends on two things: where you are flying and which area you leave from. Valladolid airport, at Villanubla, is the closest for the south of the province, 56 km from the capital and about 46 min along the A-62, but its range of flights is short and changes by season. Barajas has almost every destination and is 235 km away, with no direct train to the terminal. From the Montaña Palentina, Santander is closer than Madrid along the A-67. The sensible thing is to find the flight first and choose the airport afterwards; the transfer from home, from 87,75 € to Villanubla, fixes the price before booking.

Which airports are within reach of Palencia province?
None inside the province and three around it. Valladolid airport is at Villanubla, north-west of the city beside the León road; it is small, with domestic flights and a few European ones that come and go with the season, and for the south of Palencia it is the one close at hand. Barajas is the big airport, with almost every destination and flights at any hour, but it lies beyond Valladolid and the mountains, along the A-62 and the A-6. And Santander, with the Seve Ballesteros airport on the edge of the city, is the natural exit for the Montaña Palentina along the A-67, with domestic and European destinations. The province page sums it up: the south flies from Barajas or Valladolid and the north from Santander.
The honest way to choose starts with the flight, not the airport. If the destination flies from Villanubla on the date you want, the whole journey is shorter and cheaper than any combination through Madrid; if it does not, Barajas has the direct route or the connection, and Santander may have the European flight that is missing. What you have to add up is the full chain: the transfer to the airport, parking if you drive yourself, boarding time, which at a small terminal is brief, and the return, which usually lands at night. Each airport's routes and timetables change by season and are published by Aena; it is worth checking them before assuming a destination is still served.
When does Valladolid-Villanubla airport make sense?
When the flight exists. Villanubla is a short hop for the whole south of the province: from Palencia you go down the A-62, skirt Valladolid on its ring road and come out on the León road; from Venta de Baños it is 48 km and from Dueñas or Villamuriel a little less, each with its own route page. It is a small terminal, with the car park by the door and short queues, and for a family with luggage or an elderly person it is far more comfortable than Barajas. There is no train or bus from Palencia to the airport: the intercity bus reaches Valladolid city and another one leaves from there to the terminal, with timetables that do not cover every flight, so most people go by car, their own or with a driver.
From further north the sums change little in kilometres and a lot in comfort: from Aguilar de Campoo it is 151 km along the A-67 and the A-62, the same road as to Palencia plus half an hour, so for a flight leaving from Villanubla rather than Santander it remains a reasonable option. What to bear in mind is the short range: with few flights a day to each destination, a cancellation leaves fewer alternatives than at Barajas, and the return may land at an hour when there is no longer a bus into Valladolid. That is why the transfer is booked with the flight number, out and back, and the driver waits in arrivals with a sign even if the plane is late.
When does Barajas make sense, even though it is over two hours away?
When the destination flies from neither Villanubla nor Santander, which is usual for long-haul flights and many European capitals, or when you need a specific time and Barajas is the only airport that has it. The road is the A-62 to Valladolid and the A-6 from Tordesillas, or the A-601 towards Segovia and the AP-6, entering the airport by the M-40: from Palencia it is about 181 min in daytime with no incidents, and from Dueñas the published "from" fare is 287,14 € for the whole car. There is no direct train to the terminal: by train you reach Chamartín and carry on by suburban rail or metro, a change that weighs with luggage and first thing in the morning.
The car with a driver is the option that best fits Barajas in three situations: the flight that leaves before the first train from Palencia arrives, the night-time landing when there is no train back, and the group or family with luggage, because the price is per car and not per person. It is worth stating the terminal when booking, because T4 is separate from T1, T2 and T3, and the pickup point on the way back is different. For anyone travelling alone, by day and with little luggage, the train to Chamartín and suburban rail to T4 is an honest combination; the province's guide on Palencia to Madrid and Barajas compares the two at length.
And from the Montaña Palentina: Santander before Barajas?
Yes, almost always, provided the flight allows it. Aguilar de Campoo sits on the A-67, the motorway that climbs through Reinosa to Santander, and the Cantabrian capital is 104 km away, against 339 km to Barajas via Palencia, Valladolid and the Guadarrama mountains. The Seve Ballesteros airport lies on the edge of Santander beside the motorway and has domestic flights and services to several European cities; from the mountains, moreover, it is the same road that leads to the port and the ferry. The province page advises it plainly: from Aguilar, consider Santander before Barajas, because it is considerably closer and the A-67 goes straight there. Guardo joins Aguilar on the CL-626 and follows the same road.
The mountain variable is winter. The A-67 crosses the Pozazal pass between Aguilar and Reinosa, and with snow or ice the first hours of the morning are the slowest; the province page asks for a margin before early flights. The driver confirms the day before, brings the departure forward if the forecast advises it and, if a road is closed, tells the customer through the app rather than missing the pickup. In summer the opposite happens: traffic towards Cantabria grows at weekends and trips to Santander mix with tourism to the natural park and the reservoirs, so it is worth booking a few days ahead and not the night before. The price is the same in August as in February: fixed before booking, per car and trip.
How do you book the airport transfer, and what happens if the flight changes?
With the flight number, the terminal and the pickup address: the driver works out the departure to arrive with the check-in margin the airline asks for, and the price is fixed before confirming, for the whole car, with tolls and luggage included. On the way back, the booking carries the arriving flight and the driver follows the plane in the app; if it lands late, the pickup moves with it and the driver waits in arrivals with a sign bearing the traveller's name, at Villanubla, Barajas or Santander. The airport pickup page explains where the driver waits at each terminal; the invoice is issued in the name of the traveller or their company, and a company with frequent trips can open an account with a monthly invoice.
If the flight is cancelled or moved to another day, the booking is changed or cancelled under the cancellation policy published on the help page, which is the one that applies, and the knowledge centre piece on delayed or cancelled flights explains what happens to a transfer that waits. Against your own car, the sums are simple: for two or three days the airport car park is reasonable; for a week or more its cost comes close to the return transfer, and the car stays at home for whoever needs it. Every route in the province to Villanubla, Barajas or Santander has its page with the "from" fare, and the calculator gives the exact figure with the address, date and time.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the closest airport to Palencia?
Valladolid's, at Villanubla, along the A-62 and the Valladolid ring road; it is the closest for the capital, El Cerrato and Tierra de Campos. For the Montaña Palentina the closest is Santander, along the A-67. Neither has the range of Barajas.
Are there flights to every destination from Valladolid airport?
No. Villanubla has a short range of domestic flights and a few European ones that change by season; the current routes are published by Aena. If the destination does not fly from there, Barajas has almost all of them and Santander some European ones.
How much is Palencia to Barajas airport with a driver?
The published "from" fare is 292,40 € for the whole car, tolls included; the calculator gives the exact price with your address, date and time. To Villanubla, from 87,75 €.
From Aguilar de Campoo, is Santander or Barajas better?
Santander, if the flight leaves from there: the A-67 goes straight there and it is much closer than Madrid. Barajas only when the destination or the time exists at neither Santander nor Villanubla. In winter, the Pozazal pass calls for a margin first thing in the morning.
What if my flight lands late at Villanubla or Barajas?
The booking carries the flight number and the driver follows the actual arrival in the app: the pickup moves with the delay and the driver waits in arrivals with the sign. The waiting and cancellation conditions are on the help page.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.
Each airport's destinations and timetables belong to Aena and the airlines and change by season; check them before booking the flight. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents; in winter the A-67 and the Guadarrama mountains can lengthen them. The exact price and the waiting and cancellation conditions are those of the calculator and the help page on the date consulted.
