Driving a private hire car in Palencia: the high-speed station, the Venta de Baños junction, Valladolid half an hour away, Barajas along the A-62 and the mountains; the method for doing the sums and this province's variables

Palencia is a long province with almost everything in the south: the high-speed station, the Venta de Baños junction, the Río Carrión Hospital and Valladolid half an hour away on the A-62, so the car with a driver lives on connections of two sizes: medium ones, from the mountains and Tierra de Campos to the station and the hospital, and long ones, to Barajas along the A-62 and the A-6, 235 km away, or to Santander along the A-67 from Aguilar and Guardo. This guide explains the method and promises nothing: the car's fixed costs, the empty kilometres of returning without a customer, the corridors with demand and the hours that get covered. The commission, the pay and the simulator are on the drivers page; there are no earnings or job figures here.

What makes Palencia different for a driver: a long province with Valladolid next door?

Geography and the neighbour. Palencia stretches from south to north: at the bottom the capital and El Cerrato, flat and half an hour from Valladolid on the A-62; in the middle Tierra de Campos, with the Camino de Santiago through Frómista and Carrión; at the top the Montaña Palentina, with Aguilar de Campoo and Guardo, looking to Cantabria along the A-67. Palencia station is on the high-speed line from Madrid to León and is the head of the line to Santander; Venta de Baños remains a junction for regional trains to Burgos and León. There is no airport: the south flies from Villanubla or Barajas and the north from Santander. And the only general hospital, the Río Carrión, is in the capital, so the whole province comes down to it.

Valladolid changes the sums for a Palencia driver more than in any other province of Castilla y León: its Campo Grande station has more services to Madrid than Palencia's, its airport is half an hour away and its hospitals take the referrals from the Río Carrión, so part of the jobs from the south of the province end there rather than in the province's own capital. That shortens the connections, but it also means competing with Valladolid's cars on the same corridor. The route pages publish trips from eleven origins in the province to the station, the hospital, the two airports, Madrid, Valladolid, Burgos, León, Santander, the cathedral and La Olmeda, with the figure the customer sees before booking.

Which corridors have demand in this province, and what figures does the engine publish?

Five corridors, with the engine's figures the customer sees and on which you are paid. The long one to Madrid: Palencia to Barajas, about 181 min along the A-62 and the A-6, from 292,40 €, with tolls inside the price, and the Venta de Baños, Dueñas and Villamuriel pages for the same destination. The short one to Valladolid: Palencia to Villanubla, 56 km, and Venta de Baños to Campo Grande, 41 km, for anyone who cannot find a train in Palencia. The connections with Palencia station from the north, to a train time: Aguilar to the station, 95 km, from 125,95 €. The hospital, which brings the whole province in the morning, with Guardo and Carrión as typical origins and a page each. And the north to Santander along the A-67: Aguilar to Santander, 104 km, the mountain's summer trip.

Demand has seasons, and knowing them is part of the method. The Camino de Santiago brings pilgrims from spring to autumn through Frómista and Carrión, with transfers of backpacks, of the injured and of arrivals at the station; San Antolín, in early September, fills the capital and sends people out at night to El Cerrato and the villages after the last bus has gone; Holy Week closes the centre for several days and coincides with departures for Madrid and the coast; summer, from June to September, raises tourism in the mountains and traffic on the A-67 towards Cantabria. In winter, snow in the mountains and fog in Tierra de Campos change the times. Nobody promises how many jobs there will be in a week in Guardo or Carrión: what there is is a price known before you set off and a demand that runs by area and by month.

How do you do the sums: fixed costs, empty kilometres and hours covered?

The method has three variables and no borrowed figures. The first is the year's fixed costs, the ones paid even if the car does not move: the authorisation and its insurance covering passengers, the roadworthiness test, the vehicle's depreciation or finance payment, the self-employed contribution, the accountant and the phone; they are added up and spread over the hours or kilometres you really intend to cover. The second is the variable costs per kilometre: fuel, tyres, maintenance and the AP-6 tolls when the road to Madrid goes via Segovia, which rise with every job. The third, and the one that weighs most in Palencia, is the empty kilometres: a Barajas run from the capital is 235 km with a customer and as many again back without one, unless they booked a round trip or another job turns up in Madrid.

In Palencia the empty-kilometres variable has a shape of its own: the mountain driver who comes down to the station or the hospital returns to Aguilar or Guardo without a customer, unless they chain it with a train pickup or with the patient's return at the end of the appointment, which is why the round-trip booking with waiting is the one that fits best from the north. The hours covered close the sums: airports in the small hours and late evening, the hospital in the morning, the station for the first and last trains, the fiestas at night and tourism mid-morning with waiting. With the fixed costs, the cost per kilometre, the foreseeable empty kilometres of the corridor and the hours you will cover, the sums work themselves out, and the simulator on the drivers page does them with the published conditions and the current commission; the knowledge centre piece on the cost per kilometre explains what lies behind a fare.

How does a job reach your phone, what is bidding, and what are the rules?

The customer books on the website or in the app with pickup, destination, date and time and sees a fixed price before confirming; the job appears in the driver app with all the details and the amount, and you accept or decline. As an option, the partner driver can bid for the jobs nobody covers in their area: the platform shows the open jobs in the comarca, for instance a small-hours pickup in Guardo or a Barajas run from Carrión, and the driver proposes a price, with no obligation and without anyone promising how many there will be. Once accepted, the app navigates to the pickup, tracks the trip states and generates the trip sheet before departure. The conditions for payment, late cancellation and waiting are published on the drivers page and the help page, and those are the ones that apply.

The province's rules: at Palencia station, at Venta de Baños, at Villanubla and at Barajas the pickup is always a customer with a booking, with their train or flight on the job, and the app follows delays; you cannot wait at the taxi rank or offer the car to people getting off. During San Antolín and Holy Week the centre of Palencia is closed and the job carries the pickup point the city council allows. In winter the mountains call for a margin: the driver confirms the day before, brings the departure forward if there is snow or ice on the A-67 or the CL-615 and, if a road is closed, tells the customer through the app rather than missing the pickup. On the Camino, the pilgrim gives the hostel or the exact spot and the number of backpacks, and the driver chooses the car by the luggage.

What legal framework applies: Royal Decree-Law 13/2018, the regional government and trips to Valladolid, Madrid and Santander?

The VTC authorisation is national and is governed by the Land Transport Act with the regulation that develops it, the ROTT; Royal Decree-Law 13/2018 established that this authorisation covers interurban services and left urban services in the hands of each autonomous region, which decides whether to regulate them and on what terms. In Castilla y León, responsibility for interurban transport and for regulating urban VTC services lies with the regional government, which publishes the requirements on its transport portal, and town councils may add their own by-laws. What does not change in any region is pre-booking: every job is contracted before it starts, carries a trip sheet and is filed with the Ministry of Transport's services register, and the platform generates both for every booking.

Trips to Valladolid, Burgos and León stay within the region and raise no question; those ending in Madrid or Santander are legal under a Castilla y León authorisation because the origin is in the province, and the return from Barajas or from Santander with a customer heading home has its origin outside the region and counts towards the share of services outside the authorisation's territory that the ROTT allows, so it pays to keep count and not station the car to pick up work in Madrid or Cantabria. To work you need a valid driving licence, the authorisation in the holder's name, insurance covering passengers, the roadworthiness test and the registration document, all checked before the first job. The knowledge centre pieces on national and regional regulation explain the detail; the application is sent from the drivers page, stating the comarca and whether you bring a vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the commission and the payment conditions?

On the drivers page, with the simulator that does the sums with your fixed costs, your kilometres and your comarca. This guide explains the method and Palencia's variables; it publishes no figure for earnings, jobs or commission, because they change and the current ones are there.

Can you pick someone up at Palencia station or Villanubla without a booking?

No. A VTC only performs pre-booked services; at the station and the airports the pickup is a customer with a booking and their train or flight on the job. Waiting at the taxi rank or soliciting on the platform or in arrivals is prohibited.

What is bidding for uncovered jobs?

An option for the partner driver: the platform shows the jobs in their area that nobody has accepted and the driver proposes a price to do them. It is not compulsory, it does not replace assigned jobs and it does not promise that there will be open jobs every week.

How much is Palencia to Barajas, the province's typical long job?

About 181 min along the A-62 and the A-6 without traffic, from 292,40 € according to the route engine; it is the price the customer sees. The return without a customer is the variable that weighs most in this corridor's sums.

Can I work from Aguilar de Campoo towards Santander with a Castilla y León authorisation?

Yes, as long as the job's origin is in the province. Pickups in Santander to come back to Aguilar have their origin outside the region and fall within the share the ROTT allows, so it pays to keep count and not station the car to pick up work in Cantabria.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.

The commission, payment conditions, waiting time and cancellation policy are those published on the drivers page and the help page on the date consulted; the regulations cited are those in force on that date and the regional government may change the rules for urban services. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents. None of this promises a volume of jobs or earnings.
