Dueñas, Baltanás and Herrera de Pisuerga: getting from El Cerrato and the northern plain to Palencia station, the hospital and Madrid

Dueñas, Baltanás and Herrera de Pisuerga depend on the capital for the hospital and the train, but each gets there by a different road. Dueñas sits beside the A-62, halfway to Valladolid, and Palencia station is 23 km away. Baltanás, the main town of El Cerrato, heads out on minor roads: the Hospital Río Carrión is 28 km away, from 46,78 € per car. Herrera de Pisuerga, to the north beside the A-67 and the Canal de Castilla, goes down to the station from 101,75 €. For flying, the usual answer is Barajas: from Dueñas, 287,14 € along the A-62 and A-6. The price is fixed before you book and is per car, not per person.

Why do Dueñas, Baltanás and Herrera de Pisuerga need different solutions?

The province of Palencia stretches from south to north, and these three towns are spread along it. Dueñas and Baltanás belong to El Cerrato, the area of high plateaus and valleys in the south-east, closely tied to Palencia and Valladolid; but while Dueñas sits on the A-62 and the Pisuerga valley, with a railway station and the city of Valladolid close by, Baltanás lies inside the district, far from the dual carriageways. Herrera de Pisuerga is north of the capital, in the Boedo-Ojeda area, beside the river and the Canal de Castilla, with the A-67 nearby and the Montaña Palentina already on the horizon. For the hospital and the high-speed train all three look to Palencia, but the route and the time it takes are nothing alike.

That difference explains why this guide deals with each town separately. From Dueñas the usual question is whether to go up to Palencia or down to Valladolid, which has more train frequencies to Madrid. From Baltanás the problem is the lack of direct public transport: the villages inside El Cerrato are poorly connected with each other and almost everything goes through the capital, so an appointment or an early train calls for a car. From Herrera, the issue is the distance to the capital and, for flying, whether Barajas or Santander airport makes more sense, the latter being closer for the north of the province. What the three share comes at the end: winter on the plateau, the festivities that close streets and the needs of families and older people.

How do you travel from Dueñas, halfway between Palencia and Valladolid?

Dueñas lies beside the A-62, the Castilla motorway, in the Pisuerga valley and along the route of the Canal de Castilla. Nearby stands the monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas, home to Trappist monks, very close to where the Carrión and Pisuerga rivers meet. The town has a railway station with few regional services, whose timetables Renfe publishes, so for high-speed trains you have to go to Palencia or Valladolid. For healthcare, the reference is the Hospital Río Carrión in the capital, and a transfer from Dueñas costs from 31,45 €. For some specialities patients from the province are referred to Valladolid, and in that case Dueñas has the advantage of already being on the way.

For the fast train to Madrid, the choice between Palencia and Valladolid depends on the timetable. Palencia station is on the high-speed line from Madrid to León and Asturias, and Valladolid-Campo Grande has more frequencies, so anyone who cannot find a train at the right time in Palencia sometimes prefers to drive down to Valladolid and catch it there. From Dueñas both are at a similar distance along the same motorway, and the decision can be made each time with Renfe's timetables in front of you. The practical thing is to book the transfer with the train time to hand: the driver works out the pickup with a margin and drops you at the station door. On the way back, if the train is late, the driver can wait at the exit, and the waiting conditions are on the help page.

What are the options from Baltanás, in the heart of El Cerrato?

Baltanás is the main town of El Cerrato and is known for its wine-cellar quarter, hundreds of cellars dug into the hill beside the town, protected as a Site of Cultural Interest in the ethnological ensemble category following the proceedings opened in 2014. It is a town with services for the district, but far from the motorway and the station, and its residents depend on Palencia for the hospital, the train and much of their paperwork. The district bus has few departures and does not always fit an early appointment or the return from a test that runs long. Venta de Baños, the province's historic railway junction, is 26 km away, and is another possible gateway to the train depending on the timetable.

The wine-cellar quarter also draws visitors from outside, who arrive at Palencia or Valladolid station and want to see Baltanás and other Cerrato villages without driving minor roads they do not know. For them the practical thing is to book the transfer from the station with the return pickup agreed, bearing in mind that there is no public transport in the district that would let them link visits together. For residents, the appointment at the Hospital Río Carrión is the most repeated trip, and it is worth booking both ways at once, with the estimated time you will finish and letting the driver know if the appointment runs late. It is not medical transport: it is a car with a driver for someone who can travel seated and cannot or would rather not drive, for example after a test under sedation.

How do you get out of Herrera de Pisuerga, by the Canal de Castilla?

Herrera de Pisuerga is a market town providing services for many small villages in the north of the province, beside the Pisuerga river and the northern branch of the Canal de Castilla. It heads out to the A-67, the motorway linking Palencia with Aguilar de Campoo and Santander, and from there goes down to the capital for the hospital and the train. An appointment at the Hospital Río Carrión means about 57 min each way in daytime, plus the wait and the return, so it takes up a good part of the day for anyone who relies on the bus. In winter, early-morning frost is common in this part of the province, and for an early appointment it is worth bringing the pickup forward and not cutting the margins fine.

On the first Sunday in August the town holds the Festival of the River Crayfish, declared of tourist interest in Castilla y León, according to Turismo de Castilla y León, with competitions and the burning of the crayfish bonfire figure at the end of the day. That day many visitors arrive from outside, and the night-time return to the capital or other villages is among the most sought-after journeys. In summer, traffic also increases on the A-67 towards Cantabria and the Montaña Palentina, with visits to the Romanesque churches and the reservoirs. For flying, Santander airport is closer to Herrera than Barajas, and it is worth comparing flights at both before booking; the calculator gives the fixed price with the exact address.

Palencia, Venta de Baños or Valladolid for the train, and how do you reach Madrid and Barajas?

For the train, Palencia station, near the centre, is on the high-speed line from Madrid to León and Asturias, and is also the starting point of the line to Santander via Aguilar de Campoo. Venta de Baños, the historic railway junction, connects with Madrid, León, Burgos and Santander, though on different timetables. Valladolid-Campo Grande offers more frequencies to Madrid. From the Montaña or from inside El Cerrato, reaching the first trains without a car is very difficult, because the district buses do not match them. For Madrid by car, the route from these towns heads down the A-62 to Valladolid and continues along the A-601 towards Segovia and the AP-6, or along the A-6 from Tordesillas; from Herrera, Chamartín is 305 km away.

For Barajas, on reaching Madrid you join the M-40 or M-50 to the terminal. From Baltanás the journey takes around 154 min in daytime, with a pickup at home and a drop at the right terminal. There is no direct train from Palencia to the airport: you have to change in Madrid, and for early flights a car from home is the safest option and avoids spending the night before in the capital. Valladolid airport, at Villanubla, is the closest to the province, but what it offers is limited and changes by season, so it is worth checking the flight with Aena. On the way back, the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and follows the flight if it is delayed.

What changes with winter, festivities, children and older people?

In winter, fog and frost are common on the plateau in the morning, in the Pisuerga valley at Dueñas, on the Cerrato uplands and on the plain around Herrera, and with snow on the Guadarrama you can ask when booking for the car to use the AP-6 tunnel. For an early flight or train it is worth bringing the pickup forward and checking road conditions with the DGT. In the province's calendar, Palencia's Holy Week counts, with processions closing streets in the centre for several days at a time of many holiday departures, as do the San Antolín festivities in early September, when night-time returns to El Cerrato and the villages are the most requested. On those dates it is worth booking well in advance.

For older people living alone in these towns whose family is in Valladolid, Madrid or another city, the transfer to an appointment can be booked in their name from elsewhere, with their phone number so the driver can let them know on arrival, and an adapted vehicle can be requested if they use a wheelchair. For families coming back to the village in summer or at Christmas from the station or from Barajas, the useful thing is to say how many child seats are needed and how much luggage is coming, so the car is the right size. The price is per car and known before confirming, VAT included and with an invoice if requested. The waiting and cancellation conditions are on the help page.
