From Palencia to Atocha, Valladolid, Burgos and León: the train from Palencia or Venta de Baños, the coach or a car with a driver along the A-62, the A-67 and the A-231
From Palencia the direct train works well towards Valladolid and León, on the high-speed line passing through the capital's station; Burgos is reached via Venta de Baños, with fewer options. By road, the A-62 leads to Valladolid southwards and to Burgos eastwards, and León is reached on the A-67 to Osorno and then the A-231. A car with a driver goes door to door at whatever time is needed: to Valladolid, from 73,15 €; to Burgos, from 121,99 €; to León, from 169,98 €; and to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha, from 308,85 €. The price is per car, not per person.

Which capitals have a direct train from Palencia station?
Palencia station is close to the centre and is part of the high-speed line linking Madrid with León and Asturias, so Valladolid and León are one direct train away. It is also the starting point of the conventional line to Santander through Aguilar de Campoo. A few kilometres away, Venta de Baños is the province's historic rail junction: there the line towards Burgos and the Basque Country separates from the one heading up to León, which is why getting to Burgos by train usually means changing at Venta de Baños or finding one of the few trains that make the trip. Renfe publishes the timetables, which change by season, so it is worth checking them before fixing an appointment or a connection.
For Valladolid and León, the train is the natural choice for someone travelling alone, with little luggage and heading somewhere near the arrival station: Campo Grande, in central Valladolid, or León station, beside the Bernesga. Its limits lie at the ends of the journey. From the Montaña Palentina, Tierra de Campos or the Vega-Valdavia, the local bus does not reach Palencia station in time for the first trains, and at the destination you may need a city bus to a hospital, an industrial estate or a faculty. Scheduled coaches between capitals leave Palencia bus station, with timetables and stops published by the operating companies, and are the budget choice for anyone with time.
When is it better to go to Valladolid in a car with a driver rather than by train?
Valladolid is 49 km away along the A-62, through Dueñas, and for many people in Palencia it is part of daily life: work, university, shopping, errands with the Junta de Castilla y León and appointments at Valladolid's hospitals, to which some specialities not handled at the Hospital Río Carrión are referred. That is why the trip is so frequent and for such different reasons. A car with a driver pays off when the appointment is at a hospital or address far from Campo Grande, when an older person who should not make changes is travelling, when the return depends on when an appointment ends or when the trip starts in a village rather than the capital.
From El Cerrato the trip is shorter still: Venta de Baños to Valladolid, from 62,67 €, on the A-62. There is also a use the province page records: anyone who cannot find a train to Madrid at the right time in Palencia drives down to Campo Grande, which has more services, and boards the train there. And in the other direction, Villanubla airport, north-west of Valladolid, is the closest to Palencia, though with few routes. The train wins for one person going to central Valladolid at an hour with several services: there the ticket usually costs less than the car and the trip is just as quick.
How do you drive to Burgos and León?
Burgos is reached heading east on the A-62, the Castilla motorway, which crosses El Cerrato and Tierra de Campos through Torquemada and carries on to the Burgos capital, 91 km away. It is a business trip between two industrial capitals, a trip for appointments at the Hospital Universitario de Burgos and a visit to the cathedral and Atapuerca. León is reached heading north on the A-67 to Osorno, where you join the A-231, the Camino de Santiago motorway, which passes Carrión de los Condes and Sahagún before reaching León, in about 101 min according to the route engine. León is a family and work trip, and a link with Asturias through the Pajares bypass.
Both corridors cross open plains where morning fog and frost are common in winter, and the DGT publishes their state live. For a trip with a fixed time, such as a medical appointment, a public examination or a court hearing, it is worth leaving with a margin and saying so when booking. Coaches link Palencia with Burgos and León from the bus station, and the train reaches León directly; to Burgos, however, the train almost always means going through Venta de Baños. That is why the car wins more often for Burgos than for León: when several people travel and share the per-car price, when there is luggage or when the return is the same day and cannot depend on a connection.
What changes if the trip starts in the Montaña Palentina or Tierra de Campos?
From the north of the province, going down to Palencia to catch the train or the coach makes the trip much longer, and sometimes makes no sense. Aguilar de Campoo sits on the A-67 and has direct routes to the neighbouring capitals that skip Palencia: to Burgos, from 113,15 €, by road eastwards; to León, from 198,07 €, down the A-67 to the A-231. From Guardo, in the old mining area, you first head for the A-67 or down to Palencia, depending on the destination. In winter snow and ice can complicate early departures from the Montaña, and it is worth leaving a margin on any trip with a fixed time.
Tierra de Campos has its own rhythm. Carrión de los Condes and Frómista lie on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, and from spring to autumn there are pilgrims who need to skip a stage, return home after an injury or reach the station with their rucksack; in those cases you give the hostel or the exact pickup point and how many rucksacks you carry. For residents of these towns, an appointment in Valladolid or Burgos means leaving in the small hours if they rely on the bus. A car with a driver collects you at home, drops you at the hospital door and, if booked that way, collects you again afterwards. For an older person, that difference weighs more than the price.
How do you reach Madrid-Puerta de Atocha from Palencia?
High-speed trains from Palencia to Madrid pass through Valladolid and arrive from the north, at Chamartín. To carry on to Atocha you change to the Cercanías, which links the two stations through the tunnel under the centre, unless your ticket shows a train that continues; Renfe details this at purchase. Atocha matters to anyone connecting there with trains to the south or east of the peninsula, to anyone with an appointment around the Paseo del Prado or Méndez Álvaro, next to the Estación Sur coach station, or to anyone returning from a long trip with luggage and arriving at that station. For one person with time to spare, the train to Chamartín and the Cercanías are the sensible choice.
By road you go down the A-62 to Valladolid and from there carry on along the A-6, crossing the Guadarrama through the AP-6 toll tunnel or over the Alto del León, or along the A-601 towards Segovia. The route engine calculates about 180 min to the door of Atocha in daytime with no incidents, with the real time closely tied to the hour you enter Madrid. The car pays off when you are connecting with an early train south that the first train from Palencia cannot reach with a margin, when a family travels with luggage or when someone arrives at Atocha at night and wants to get home without waiting until the next day.
How do you book the outward and return trips, and what changes with the time of year?
You book on the website or in the app with the exact pickup and destination addresses, the date and the time, and the price is fixed before you confirm: it is what you pay, per vehicle and VAT included, with an invoice if you ask. Outward and return trips are booked as two journeys with their own times, and if the return depends on an appointment you set a cautious time; how to change or cancel a transfer is on the help page, as is how tolls are handled if the trip uses a toll motorway. You can book for someone else with their name and phone number, and companies with frequent trips between capitals can group journeys in a business account with one invoice.
The time of year changes the journey. In winter fog and frost are common on the plateau in the morning, and snow can complicate the Montaña and the Guadarrama crossing towards Atocha; for a connection with a fixed time it is worth bringing the pickup forward. In Holy Week the processions run through central Palencia and close streets for several days, at a time with many holiday departures. In early September the San Antolín fiestas fill the capital, and night-time returns to El Cerrato and the villages are the most requested. In summer trips to the Montaña Palentina and Cantabria grow, and the Camino de Santiago adds pilgrims who need to reach a station.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Venta de Baños to Burgos with a driver?
The published 'from' fare is 120,06 € per car, not per person. The calculator gives the exact amount with your address, date and time, and it is fixed before you book. From the capital, the Palencia to Burgos route has its own page with price, distance and time.
Is there a direct train from Palencia to Burgos?
The offer is limited: you usually change at Venta de Baños, where the Burgos line branches off. It is worth checking the day's trains with Renfe; if they do not fit, the coach from Palencia bus station or the car on the A-62 are the alternatives.
Can you take me to Atocha to connect with a train south?
Yes. You book with the pickup address and the time of the train leaving Atocha, and the driver works out the departure with a margin for the mountain crossing and traffic into Madrid. The price is fixed before you confirm and is per car.
Can I book the trip for a relative going to a hospital in Valladolid?
Yes. You book in their name, with their phone number and the exact hospital address, and you can book the return too. It is a transfer in a car with a driver, not medical transport: if the person needs medical assistance during the journey, an ambulance is required.
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car and per journey, VAT included. A family or a small group shares a single amount; if you need a larger vehicle or an adapted one, you say so when booking and the calculator takes it into account.
